Real Mutually Unbiased Bases

چکیده
We tabulate bounds on the optimal number of mutually unbiased bases in R. For most dimensions d, it can be shown with relatively simple methods that either there are no real orthonormal bases that are mutually unbiased or the optimal number is at most either 2 or 3. We discuss the limitations of these methods when applied to all dimensions, shedding some light on the difficulty of obtaining tight bounds for the remaining dimensions that have the form d = 16n, where n can be any number. We additionally give a simpler, alternative proof that there can be at most d/2+1 real mutually unbiased bases in dimension d instead of invoking the known results on extremal Euclidean line sets by Cameron and Seidel, Delsarte, and Calderbank et al.

On the equivalence between real mutually unbiased bases and a certain class of association schemes
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in complex vector spaces play several important roles in quantum information theory. At present, even the most elementary questions concerning the maximum number of such bases in a given dimension and their construction remain open. In an attempt to understand the complex case better, some authors have also considered real MUBs, mutually unbiased bases in real vec...
متن کاملOn the Maximal Number of Real Mutually Unbiased Bases
In this note I point out that (1) pairs of real mutually unbiased bases (i.e., orthonormal bases of R) can only exist in dimensions 2 or d where d is a multiple of 4 and that (2) triples of real mutually unbiased bases can only exist in dimensions d that are also squares. For the case d = 2 the maximal number of real MUBs is given by (d+ 2)/2 (this follows from known results on extremal euclide...
متن کاملThree Ways to Look at Mutually Unbiased Bases
This is a review of the problem of Mutually Unbiased Bases in finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, real and complex. Also a geometric measure of “mubness” is introduced, and applied to some explicit calculations in six dimensions (partly done by Björck and by Grassl). Although this does not yet solve any problem, some appealing structures emerge. Talk at the Växjö conference on Foundations of Pro...
متن کاملSystems of mutually unbiased Hadamard matrices containing real and complex matrices
We use combinatorial and Fourier analytic arguments to prove various non-existence results on systems of real and complex unbiased Hadamard matrices. In particular, we prove that a complete system of complex mutually unbiased Hadamard matrices (MUHs) in any dimension cannot contain more than one real Hadamard matrix. We also give new proofs of several known structural results in low dimensions.
متن کامل16 2 v 2 3 0 M ar 2 00 1 A new proof for the existence of mutually unbiased bases ∗
We develop a strong connection between maximally commuting bases of orthogonal unitary matrices and mutually unbiased bases. A necessary condition of the existence of mutually unbiased bases for any finite dimension is obtained. Then a constructive proof of the existence of mutually unbiased bases for dimensions which are power of a prime is presented. It is also proved that in any dimension d ...
